the meetings open and close with prayer to give them a semblence of holiness. in reality they don't affect anything- if there were no prayer, the meeting would still be conducted in exactly the same way. those in attendence would still pay the same level of attention. "encouraging" comments would still be equally appreciated by those that view them as encouraging. those who missed the meeting because they're sick would still get better after resting at home.

When Did You Stop Saying Amen
by BroMac infor prayers from the platform.. i've "said my own" for a few years now if i find i cant agree with what the brother is praying about.
i'm constantly amazed by the same old repetitive ramblings and just nonsense that some brothers feel is an acceptable way to pray for a congregation.. once i've finished saying my own i'll listen again to what they are going on about, and round and round they go.
the worse ones are those who can hardly speak english and i cant understand a word thats said apart from the "...feffull slive... bless bruders sis not here..." blah blah.. and everyone has gone through the public talk prayer.

Dec 15 2011 WT: playing school sports equated with cheating on taxes & lying - wtf?
by baltar447 inhere it is in p14 of the article "is he a good example for you or a warning?".
14 will we let solomons course be a warning example for us?
a sister might attempt to rationalize forming a romantic link that ignores gods directive to marry only in the lord.

With similar rationalizing, one might share in extracurricular sports
first of all, what is possibly scripturally wrong with extracurricular sports???? it just doesn't fit in the list with marrying in the lord, and cheating on taxes and lying.
secondly, even if you decide for sports after rationalizing a few things in your mind, it's nothing similar or has anything to do with Solomon. its such a stretch of the imagination!

Just Got Finish Talking To JWs At My Door
by Philadelphia Ponos init was two older ladies who had me read john 17:3 and than gave me the october 1st watchtower which reads on the front "five lies about god exposed!".
i didn't "go apostate" or tell them i'm inactive.
i prefer to do that when i get the return visit from the brother they plan on giving my info to.

good plan of going easy on the old robot ladies and waiting for the younger pioneer brothers.
perhaps you can prepare "five lies from the WT society, exposed!"

Believing is something different from purpose.
They believe in their purpose, not in the knowledge.
They can believe they are doing good
excellent point, Drew. And i believe this is becoming more and more common. both from the top down, through more personality-oriented WT articles and less on doctrine; and also in the attitude of many RnF, as quite commonly evidenced in conversation

What Stupid Things Were You Counseled For?
by minimus ini've always been told that i have a very good personality, that i'm humorous, etc.. one elder called me over and said that i was "smiling too much".
the other elders talked to the elder who counseled me and he came back to say that i should be like i was .

i dont think so. as is already expressed by many here, i think that once you've seen behind the curtain so to speak, you cannot unsee what you've seen.
i also agree with Sizemik, that perhaps ones who seemed like they're mentally free would return to full belief, if they remained indoctrinated all along. for instance, i had a sort of "first wave" of "apostate" research, which happened mostly because i was just curious about what was being said on the dark side, and i thought that i'd have no trouble distinguishing truth from lies. after a short while of being interested in that, i concluded that all the experiences i was reading sounded like upset, offended individuals who had beef with local elders or overseers, and i decided that was their personal perogative but didn't debunk the veracity of the whole religion. after that i had my period of the strongest belief! it was a few years later, under different circumstances and for different reasons, that i started to investigate again, this time about many more subjects, which led me to truely see the organization for what it is. now i could never believe in it again.

SURVEY: How many who are still "IN" are really out mentally (Do I need to put " S E X " in the Title to increase the number of hits on it?)
by DesirousOfChange inthere was quite a debate on another post about the increase/decrease throughout the wt history surrounding 1975 and subsequent time periods when ther have been major adjustments in doctrine.
it was said that the stasticis from 1965-1985 do not reflect a massive defection, despite the failure of the wt's prophecy for the end of the wicked system of things by 1975. .
i see the overlapping generation as another potention issue to cause fallout.

I was chewed out quite thoroughly for conducting a Bible study
how could that be a problem, isn't that what you're supposed to do?

then i leave that tab open all day long to look at the threads when i have time.

d, i agree, we have more interest in the religion, and also i find we know/learn more about it here than in a KH.
